40 Day Challenge, Day 12: Gratitude

valentines 2011

Start with the Prayer of Abandonment.

Today’s theme is “gratitude,” the sister virtue to generosity. Those who are thankful tend to be naturally generous.

The other day I was driving the kids to school, and one of the kids in the carpool started complaining about the fact that her parent had taken away her cell phone. “I can’t believe it! My mom just won’t let me live my own life, and make my own decisions. She’s so lame! I can’t wait until I’m 18 and can move out of the house!”

Gently but firmly, I told this young woman that she was fortunate to have a mom who works so hard to take care of her family, and who loves her so much. That part of growing up is coming to recognize how much others have sacrificed in order to give us a chance to succeed  . . . and that turning 18 doesn’t change the fact that, for most people, they still need their family.

Today is the day we are going to celebrate, to thank God for the gift of each other. When you look at your spouse, for what are you most thankful? How are you going to express your gratitude today?
